Quick Reference Troubleshooting Tips
Oxygen
- Oxygen is not flowing out of the cannula.
- Check for a blockage or hole in the oxygen tubing – If the yellow light is illuminated, there may be a blockage. Check that the lid of the humidifier bottle is threaded on correctly. This is most easily done by unscrewing the lid, removing it, and then reseating and tightening the lid.
- If this does not solve the issue, follow the length of the oxygen tubing to be sure there are no kinks in it, a piece of furniture or something is not sitting on it, or a pet has not pierced the tubing.
- Confirm oxygen is flowing out of the cannula.
- Fill a glass with water and dip the nasal port into the water. If bubbles appear, oxygen is flowing properly. If not, try attaching a new cannula and tube.
- If your concentrator is alarming (steady beeping), the red light may be illuminated. This could be caused by a power surge. If this is the case, turn the concentrator off, press the reset button, and then turn the concentrator back on. This should remove the alarm.
- The concentrator is beeping in 15 second intervals.
- This indicates the concentrator is unplugged or no power is available at this outlet. Check your home breaker has not tripped or that the concentrator is not plugged into an outlet controlling a light switch.
Nebulizer
- The nebulizer does not appear to be working.
- Check that the power to the compressor is on and the medication bulb is creating an aerosol mist. If no mist appears, clean the medication cup as directed in the instructions provided.
- If the medication bulb looks dirty, it is time for a new medication bulb. This can be ordered through your hospice nurse. Most often, you will need just a nebulizer mask or kit, not an exchange of devices.
- To checkif the compressor itself is blowing air, unplug the tubing and check for air output.
Hospital Bed
- The bed will not go up or down.
- Check that the bed is plugged in to an outlet, and check that the outlet is not controlled by a light switch.
- Look underneath the foot of the bed for the box with wires coming out of it. Check that there is a green light illuminated, showing the bed power is ON.
- If the light is on, check under the bed to ensure nothing is being stored under the bed that might have knocked out or loosened the drive shaft or disconnected any wires.
- The bed keeps moving even when the roller breaks are set.
- If the bed is on hardwood or linoleum floors, the rollator will still move. The brakes only apply to the back two wheels. Always use caution when on a smooth surface.
- The mattress has low air and does not appear to stay inflated.
- Check the bed pump to ensure it is set to STATIC. If not, set to STATIC and the bed will hold air fully.
- Check the red ‘CPR’ tag at the head of the bed is plugged into the tubing. If not, then connect it and the mattress will now hold air.
Suction Device
- The device is not providing suction.
- Check that the user is covering the opening on the Yankauer.
- You may adjust the suction power with the knob located behind the handle on the machine.
- Check that the lid is secure on the canister and the tubing is connected properly for secure connections.
- Check that the device is turned on and not connected to a light switch outlet.
